An American Voyage

I think that its amazing that there are still people out there that think Christopher Columbus discovered America. In my opinion, I think that its irresponsible for someone to still believe in this myth. In todays modern world we still find ourselves celebrating this event even though it has been proved that this tradition is incorrect

For years now, children have been taught in school that Christopher Columbus crosses the dangerous waters of the Atlantic in 1492 and discovered the Americas. Well thats wrong! Heres a brief script of what we should take as the truth if we believe the education system in this country.

In the year 1492, Columbus Crossed the Atlantic and landed on various islands in the Caribbean. Presently, the islands are referred as the Bahamas. Columbus, explored the coasts of Central and South Americas and eventually made it it North America ….

More …BLA…BLA.. BLA. You get the point. So lets move to the not so Glamorous truth about this matter….

Christopher Columbus was a tyrant to the local population. he decimated the native peoples and committed human atrocities against them.

Nearly 500 years before Columbus was even born a group of sailors had reached the new world ….They were from Norway. one of the sailors names was Leif Eriksson. Erikssons tales started being shared among his peoples in the 12th and 13th centuries. It has been recorded that he and his fellow vikings made it Canada

Even though there is plenty of evidence that Christopher Columbus didn’t discover America and was most likely discovered by Leif, there are new discoveries that havent quite made it into the mainstream yet.

Take a look at this map …

This is a picture of a detailed drawing of a map that was found in a second hand book shop. It was created by the Chinese and charted by Chinese Admiral Zheng He and is dated to 1418.

The point being and the reason why I mentioned this is that the more
we continue to research our history we are finding that everyone except Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas.

Before I go, I just wanted to say that with all this information that has been proven i don’t understand why we are still practicing old outdated traditions and continually teaching our children incorrect information.

Great post! As a big history fan I agree with you completely! Why is this a personal topic for you, why did you chose to write about it?

Why are so many people still learning about the false history of Columbus?

This i don’t really know. I think the school system needs to update their curriculum and take more of an interest in teaching their students the correct facts. It’s disappointing. I was taught this when i was in grade school and that was thirty years ago!…..

Do you think it is a matter of nationalism? What reason would cause Americans to hold onto that horrible history? Christopher Columbus was from Spain and Leif Ericsson was from Norway, considering the relation between the two countries in the start of “America” doesn’t it kind of make more since that we would give Chris the credit?

Hello and thank you for responding. To answer your question,” Yes” i do in a way. i don’t know if its because of tradition or not. I think we should give credit when and where it id do. i have nothing against the man himself but i do when we as a nation who are supposed to have the best education system in the world and are teaching our children outdated information. if we can stop education cuts maybe we can accomplish this.
